GOOGLE and Chaos -- Part of their Strategy?

In the article "Chaos by Design" Fortune, October 2, 2006 is interesting because it talks about the culture at GOOGLE and why "chaos" is all part of the plan. The eight year old company is the "ultimate petri dish" according to the Chief Chaos Officer Shona Brown (who wrote the book "Competing on the Edge" has tons of experiments going on all of the time.

The article talks about unique spaces, unique policies, unique benefits and the unique ability it has to make money. Innovation is the key to everything. The amount and level of talent is unbelievable.

What makes this company tick?
What makes it so special? We know it is different?
What is their strategy?
What do you think is their most unique characteristic?
Can they come up with a "second act" as the article asks? What will it be?

It’s no wonder why Al Gore is roaming around Google. Heck, he invented the internet!

Trying to predict the future is in a sense managing chaos. Loose reigns are great within an organization, but a decision that costs the company millions of dollars deserves a sense of deep reflection. Forgiveness is fine for now because Google is successful, but if they stumble along the way, shareholders and the demands of a public company will force more accountability and the reigns will tighten significantly.

Can the culture provide the driving impetus for continued success? The culture behind the “HP Way” is no longer the same, and who is to say the Pixar culture won’t become diluted as it is integrated with Disney. If history is any indication of the future, change will occur. The question should be whether the culture will evolve from what it is today, or become extinct because its size and ventures require tighter control.

Google's risk-taking, adventure-seeking philosophy is attractive because it defies typical organizational structure. Decisions are made quickly; employees are granted the opportunity to freelance; the atmosphere promotes creativity! Does the company have the right leadership to keep it focused and "on track" ?

Interesting to see how Google is operating. Looks like they want to be first in the market place and I guess they want to be that way as they have set their expectation for their customers. For which they have to be disruptive in technology, which also means that they have be a big risk taker.
Some of the failures as mention in the article can be overlooked but for a long run with innovation and invention they should be heavily working on Risk management too.
